Professor of biostatistics at the University of South Australia Adrian Esterman says once vaccination rates hit about 80 per cent Australia can become “COVID normal”.

“I think it would be what you might call COVID normal, so we would still need to wear masks in certain situations, we’ll still need to be aware of hygiene and still have to be aware of social distancing,” he told Sky News Australia.

“I think that’s going to be happening for a good few months.”

Professor Esterman said he predicts as early as March next year Australia could hit the 80 per cent mark.

“The current target for the government is to have all the adults with at least one dose of the vaccine by the end of the year and I think they can probably reach that target,” he said.

“Then we’ve still got to vaccinate children which would take another few months.

“So I think sort of between March and June next year we would have that percentage vaccinated.

“We really do need to get the people most at risk vaccinated first then those most exposed vaccinated second then we can get the rest of the population sorted out.”
